How we verify
The rules behind every case, number and claim on this site.
Where our cases come from
- Public Reddit posts (r/dogs, r/cats, r/Pets, r/petinsurancereviews and related communities) — every case links to the original thread.
- Better Business Bureau complaints and reviews — public records; complaint pages include the insurer's official response, so both sides are on the record.
- News investigations and official documents (policy language, state insurance department filings) — used for context and cross-checks, always linked.
Our verification rules
- Multi-source or labeled. Factual claims (rates, waiting periods, regulatory rules) are checked against at least two independent sources; where an official primary source exists, it wins. Single-source or unconfirmed items are explicitly marked unverified — we don't soften uncertainty with "probably" or "reportedly" acting as if it were confirmed.
- Conflicts are labeled, not buried. When sources disagree (they often do), we show both readings and tell you which is primary. We never silently pick a side.
- Dates on everything. Verified figures carry the date we checked them. Policy terms change; a number without a date is an liability, not a fact.
- Links are the source of record. Every case points to its original public post so you can read it in full context — we summarize, we don't republish.
What we can and can't verify
Case-log entries are self-reported accounts, not adjudicated rulings. We don't independently verify either side of a dispute, and posts may omit details. Where a figure appears in a comment rather than the main post, we say so. Posters' names are not reproduced. Figures reflect the post date, not current policy terms. A case in this log is a report — not an allegation of wrongdoing by any insurer. Carriers with the most documented payouts appear in this log too.
Independence
PetClaimLog is not owned by, affiliated with, or compensated by any pet insurance company. Some links may be affiliate links; if you buy a policy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never determine our verdicts, rankings, or verification standards — this page is the standard those links answer to. See our full affiliate disclosure.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, we want to fix it. Contact us via the How We Verify · About page with the page, the claim, and your source. Corrections are made visibly with a dated note — never silently. When our own checks catch an error, we correct it the same way.
